Building Community Through Discussion and Debate (PDF)

Imagine if your congregation, book group, JCC, or parents at your child's school were reading books together that sparked lively debate on Judaism's bedrock themes. Imagine discussion with friends, neighbors, and fellow parents about Maimonides, medical ethics, or the position of the Jew in medieval Muslim society and its relevance to today's world. Or a conversation about Emma Lazarus that tackles critical questions about the role of immigrants in America. Picture a journey through the life and work of Marc Chagall and a discussion of the provocative questions he raises about Jewish identity.

With Nextbook's One Book program you'll have the opportunity to engage in conversation and Jewish literary inquiry by reading and discussing books from our critically acclaimed Jewish Encounters series. Inspired by the enormous hunger for books on Jewish subjects written in a lively, intelligent, and popular manner, these books bring people and ideas alive in short volumes that are written and edited to be accessible to readers with even the most cursory knowledge of Jewish history and custom.

Nextbook provides almost everything you need to create a One Book program in your community—all you need to add is a gathering of interested and curious people.

When you join the One Book Program:
  • Nextbook makes all books in the Nextbook/Schocken Jewish Encounters Series available at a discounted rate of 40% off retail price; shipping is free. You can place your order over the phone by calling 646.277.2400 or by sending us an order form with a check or credit card number.
  • We will send you a General Program Guide, which provides you with a roadmap for creating a One Book program in your community. This guide is available online as well.
  • We will send you companion Readers' Guides and Program Guides specifically related to the book you order. These guides are available for your review online.
  • We will enroll you in our Leader's Forum, an online private discussion group for leaders participating in the One Book program. The forum allows you to talk to others about program ideas, share information about what is working in your community, and learn about programs in other communities and settings.
  • You can choose from any of the books (with a 20-book minimum for each title). You may choose to read one, two, or more books a year. We can fulfill orders of as few as 20 books and as many as hundreds of books within weeks of receiving an order and full payment.

What authors and participants have to say about One Book:

"The synagogue sponsored a number of get-togethers to discuss the book before I arrived; some people had finished the book and some had just begun it. But it was simply a joy to have so many thoughtful readers engage Emma Lazarus, her ideas and her writings. After a very lively Q&A, I met with a group of eighth- and ninth-graders to discuss the book too; with some coaching from a teacher, they had bravely waded into it and had marvelous questions for me. Being able to contribute to the synagogue's excellent discussion series on the politics and history of immigration was a great honor."
—Esther Schor, at Congregation KAM Isaiah Israel

"We had a very successful One Book Program here. I challenged the congregation to read Betraying Spinoza in my Rosh Hashanah sermon and on Saturday night we held a Conversation with' format discussion featuring a professor of Jewish history. We set it up salon style and over 80 people came, all ages of adults, and they were completely intrigued."
—Lori Sagarin, Director of Congregational Learning, Temple Beth Israel.
