Savyon Liebrecht
Born in 1948 in Munich to Holocaust survivors, Liebrecht immigrated to Israel as an infant. In her novels Apples from the Desert and A Man and a Woman and a Man, she chronicles daily life in the midst of political chaos. Liebrecht discusses the creative process behind three of her stories, and her discovery that some of her fictional characters struck audiences as all too real.

"Every time a complex human emotion threatened to break the surface of my consciousness, out would come terrible cleverness," writes essayist and frequent This American Life contributor David Rakoff. Rakoff's work blurs the line between journalism and satire, inviting comparisons to his friend David Sedaris. Here, the Canadian-born humorist shares essays a Buddhist retreat led by Steven Seagal, and his naturalization as American citizen.
